Sunamp partners with Gomon to launch China factory, expanding heat battery production to Asia Pacific

Scottish energy storage pioneer Sunamp has announced a landmark collaboration with Jiangsu Gomon New Energy Technology Co. Ltd., unveiling a new manufacturing facility in Jingjiang, Jiangsu Province, China. The launch marks the establishment of the ‘China-British Phase Change Energy Storage Technology Innovation Center’ and the successful roll-off of the first batch of compact heat batteries for domestic hot water manufactured under license by Gomon in China.

The partnership represents a significant step in Sunamp’s global expansion strategy which sees it using licensed factories abroad to access exciting new markets using its patented Plentigrade phase change material (PCM) technology under agreements with trusted partners. The company’s long-established production line in Scotland will continue to serve growing demand in Europe and other international markets.

The launch event, held on 25 November, was attended by senior officials, industry leaders, and representatives from both countries. Shen Qiang, Secretary of the Jingjiang Municipal Party Committee, hailed the collaboration as a model of “British technology and Made in Jingjiang,” combining Scotland’s expertise in thermal storage innovation with China’s manufacturing strengths and market reach.

Fang Qing, chairman of the supervisory board of the China Energy Conservation Association, described the initiative as a “double leap forward of technological breakthrough and industrial landing.” He emphasised that the rollout of PCM heat batteries brings advanced energy storage technology from laboratories into Asia-Pacific households, enabling families to benefit from efficient heat storage and reduced carbon consumption.

Gary Hunt, Commercial Consul at the British Consulate General in Shanghai, called the new facility “an important symbol of international cooperation,” highlighting its role in supporting global net-zero ambitions. He noted that Sunamp’s technology will help households, businesses, and industries across China achieve efficient heat storage and release, cutting emissions while boosting energy resilience.

Fan Tingwei, general manager of Gomon, reflected on the six-year partnership with Sunamp, likening it to a seed that has now blossomed. He underscored the theme of “Phase Change, Co-creation and Symbiosis,” pointing to the integration of Eastern and Western strengths in technology and manufacturing.

Richard Baker, President of Scottish International Development China and Trade Director for Energy Transition Asia Pacific, said the collaboration demonstrates how Scottish companies can work with Chinese partners to tackle climate change. “This collaboration will deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions with significant economic and social benefits to Scotland and China,” he said, adding that the model will encourage more Scottish firms to expand internationally.

For Sunamp, the Jingjiang facility is not a shift of its production base but a strategic expansion model. Its Scottish factory remains the hub for Europe and other global markets, while licensed facilities abroad will enable faster adoption of its patented PCM technology in regions with high demand for clean energy solutions.

By combining Scottish innovation with Chinese manufacturing scale, Sunamp and Gomon are positioning themselves at the forefront of Asia Pacific’s energy transition, offering households and industries alike a pathway to low-carbon living.
