Cleaner heat for industry: High-performance thermal storage for industrial heating and cooling

Sunamp phase change material (PCM) thermal batteries are a major leap towards lower cost, fossil-free and resilient industrial heat. Our Central Bank and Permafrost thermal batteries help industrial sites store hot and cold thermal energy when it is available and release it when it is needed. Built using our energy dense Plentigrade® phase change material, our heat batteries support low-carbon heat strategies by enabling the storage of thermal energy efficiently across a wide temperature range with low thermal losses, improving system performance while reducing energy waste and emissions.

For both heating and cooling

From dairy processors to distilleries, airports to hotels, Sunamp thermal batteries can be configured with different formulations of our high-performance phase change material, Plentigrade®, to suit cold, ambient, warm and high-temperature applications.

For example:

  • –30°C for freezing applications
  • Around 5°C for cooling and district cooling networks
  • Up to 118°C for high-temperature hot water applications
  • Above 80°C for sterilisation and process use

This flexibility makes Sunamp PCM thermal batteries suitable for both industrial heating and cooling strategies within the same energy system.

Why choose Sunamp thermal storage for your industrial projects

Decarbonization

Our heat batteries can be charged from multiple low carbon and conventional energy sources, including process and waste heat, district heating networks, grid and renewable electricity.

Energy cost reduction

Sunamp thermal batteries decouple heat generation from heat demand with low losses over time. That means sites can capture available heat, including free waste heat and lower cost off-peak electricity, then discharge when needed, providing energy cost savings.

Improve efficiency in smaller footprint

With low heat losses, Sunamp thermal batteries store heat using latent energy in a volume up to three times smaller than equivalent hot water or glycol based thermal stores, freeing up valuable plant room space and simplifying installation.

Scalable heat storage capacity

Modular & scalable, the heat batteries can also be connected in series or parallel to increase heat storage capacity needed by industrial scale systems

Non-stratified stable output

When fully charged, 70% of thermal energy is discharged around the phase change temperature, providing a stable and high grade heat output.

Key applications

Central Bank as a primary heat store

Our Central Bank range can be charged by a wide range of heat sources via its hydronic charging circuit, to be readily discharged when thermal energy is needed, replacing large buffer tanks

Permafrost as a primary cold store

Our Permafrost range can be charged and discharged on glycol circuits in cold applications as a space efficient alternative to glycol buffer tanks and large pressurised liquid refrigerant receivers.

Key sectors

Data centres

Data centres produce a significant volume of recoverable low-grade heat. Sunamp thermal storage can help capture and shift that energy for useful applications, supporting heat reuse strategies, lower emissions and improved system resilience.

Food and beverage manufacturing

Food and beverage manufacturing produces large volumes of low-grade waste heat from a wide variety of processes, including baking, cooking, pasteurisation, cleaning, chilling and condensing. Sunamp heat batteries help capture and reuse the heat when and where it is needed, improving overall efficiency. Click here to learn more.

Waste heat recovery in live industrial operations

In Kitakyushu, Japan, IHI Corporation used a Sunamp Central Bank Mini to capture surplus boiler heat from one factory and supply it to a neighbouring chemical plant. The project shows practical waste heat reuse with strong results: around 30% lower initial equipment cost than pre-trial estimates and CO₂ payback in under one year, while improving ongoing operational efficiency.
