Sunamp has achieved a King’s Award for Enterprise

Thermal storage manufacturer Sunamp has been honoured with the first ever King's Award for Enterprise.

Sunamp is one of 148 organisations nationally to be recognised with a prestigious King's Award for Enterprise. Announced today (Friday 21 April), Sunamp has been recognised for its excellence in innovation. A total of 149 Awards are made with one company being recognised with two Awards.

Employing 80 people, Sunamp was set up in 2005 and is a pioneer of innovative thermal storage solutions. From its base near Edinburgh, Sunamp designs and manufactures compact heat batteries based on its patented Plentigrade® high performance thermal storage technology platform which works with almost any energy source to help to deliver highly effective, low-carbon heating and cooling in buildings. Sunamp's Thermino range can store energy from renewable sources to deliver hot water in thermal batteries that are up to four times smaller than equivalent hot water cylinders.

Sunamp CEO Andrew Bissell said:
“This award marks a milestone in Sunamp's journey so far, from developing our game-changing phase change materials, to becoming world leaders in thermal storage technologies. The world struggled from 1947 to realise the heat battery vision of space-saving, easy to install and use, energy efficient storage for thermal energy. The lack of stable materials hampered efforts by large companies and prestigious Universities.

“We achieved the breakthrough in the early 2010s which enabled us to arrive at the solution. Since 2018 we have brought this to market via four generations of heat battery products and so far we have delivered over 25,000 units. I am proud of everything we have achieved, and receiving a King's Award recognises everyone involved.”

The King's Awards for Enterprise was previously known as The Queen's Awards for Enterprise, and the new name reflects His Majesty The King's desire to continue the legacy of HM Queen Elizabeth II's by recognising outstanding UK businesses.

The Award programme, now in its 57th year, is the most prestigious business award in the country, with successful businesses able to use the esteemed King's Awards Emblem for the next five years.

Applications for King's Awards for Enterprise 2024 open on His Majesty The King's Coronation, 6th May 2023 For more information, visit https://www.gov.uk/kingsawards-for-enterprise.
