Sunamp heat batteries win VIBES Scottish Environment Business Award

Sunamp has been recognised with a VIBES Scottish Environment Business Award.

Announced on Wednesday 8 November, the awards champion the link between economic success and environmental sustainability. Sunamp’s thermal storage solutions won the Product Scotland category.

Based near Edinburgh and employing over 80 people, Sunamp is a pioneer of innovative thermal storage solutions. The company was founded in 2005 with ambitions to transform how heat is generated, stored and used, to tackle climate change and reach net zero.

Sunamp designs and manufactures compact heat batteries containing Plentigrade, its patented high performance phase change material. The thermal batteries work with almost any energy source to help deliver highly effective low-carbon heating and cooling in buildings.

Sunamp’s Thermino range can store energy from renewable sources to deliver hot water in heat batteries that are more than four times smaller than equivalent hot water cylinders.

The company was also recognised with the first for Enterprise in April this year for excellence in innovation.

Sunamp CEO Andrew Bissell said:

“Winning the VIBES Product Scotland award recognises the hard work which has gone into developing our innovative thermal storage solutions, over many years.

‘We achieved the breakthrough behind our game-changing phase change materials in the early 2010s and brought our heat battery products to market in 2018. Over 25,000 units have been delivered so far, helping decarbonise hot water in homes and businesses.

‘I’m proud of our strong roots in Scotland and our journey to becoming world leaders in thermal storage technologies. The award recognises everyone who has been part of this.”

The VIBES Scottish Environment Business Awards celebrate the efforts of companies working to reduce pressure on the planet’s resources, accelerate action towards net zero, and reinforce the symbiotic relationship between the economy and the environment.

Since 1999, VIBES has recognised hundreds of Scottish businesses driving positive and radical environmental action. More than 40 businesses were shortlisted this year and winners were selected following a robust judging process. VIBES is a partnership between SEPA, the Scottish Government, Energy Saving Trust, Highlands & Islands Enterprise, Scottish Enterprise, South of Scotland Enterprise, Scottish Water, Zero Waste Scotland and NatureScot.
