Sunamp celebrated for physics breakthrough adding to awards in innovation

Scottish thermal storage innovator adds Institute of Physics Business Innovation Award to roster of honours, underscoring cross disciplinary excellence in energy solutions.

Scottish thermal storage pioneer Sunamp has added another accolade to its growing roster of honours, receiving the prestigious Institute of Physics Business Innovation Award for its breakthrough in compact thermal storage using advanced finned tube heat exchanger technology. By overcoming a critical physics challenge to dramatically enhance heat transfer efficiency and energy storage in high flow rate hot water applications, Sunamp continues to demonstrate the breadth and depth of excellence driving its impact on global energy solutions.

This latest recognition highlights the company’s unique position at the intersection of physics, chemistry and engineering, where its innovations have already secured top awards across all three fields, alongside The King’s Award for Innovation.

The Institute of Physics (IOP) is the professional body and learned society for physics in the UK and Ireland. With a rich history of supporting business innovation and growth, it is committed to working with ‘physics-powered’ businesses, and companies that apply and employ physics and physicists.

The IOP Business Innovation Award specifically recognises and celebrates companies that have excelled in innovation, delivering significant economic and/or societal impact through the application of physics.

Sunamp CEO Grant Richardson said: “This award is a powerful endorsement of the physics at the heart of our technology. By solving a fundamental challenge in heat transfer, we’ve unlocked new levels of efficiency in thermal storage which is now proven in the real world with almost 40,000 Thermino heat batteries installed in homes across UK, Europe and North America. As we open our first licensed factory in partnership with Gomon to serve the Asia Pacific market, Sunamp is demonstrating how cross‑disciplinary innovation in physics, chemistry and engineering can be successfully commercialised at global scale, delivering real impact for a sustainable energy future.”

Institute of Physics President Professor Michele Dougherty said: “Physics drives discovery and innovation, transforming our understanding of the world. And it is the innovations of physics-powered businesses that are driving our economy, creating jobs and addressing the challenges that face us today. My sincerest congratulations to them all. “
